1 | Kraan | Sarah's Ritt durch Schwarzwald | Kraan | 1972 | Germanofon? |
Kraan has a very unique sound that is a combination of jazz, progressive
and Arabian-sounding influences. They have a knack for spicing their songs
with catchy hooks that are powerful and delivered with a sound that is so
uniquely Kraan. I like all of their albums, but, their prime progressive
albums are pre-1976, which are all highly recommended. At this time, all
of their CD's are hard to find, but, EMI has plans to re-release all Kraan
on CD soon!

2 | Ernst Schultz | Der Traumtanzer | Paranoia Picknick | 1971 | Ohrwaschl |
Solo project from Ihre Kinder vocalist/composer/guitarist. The album actually includes the entire line-up of Ihre Kinder. It's not overtly proggish, but, is pleasant enough with a mix of folk, rock and eastern influences. Maybe a bit like Donovan.
3 | Tetragon | Nature | Nature | 1971 | Musea |
All instrumental (save a little bit on the title tracks) jazzy and hard progressive. Comparable to the Nice, Brian Auger's Trinity (Befour) or Oblivion Express, Deep Purple, Ekseption or Framus 5. The keyboardist Hendrik Schaper later went on to join Klaus Doldinger's Passport - but, unfortunately Passport was quite boring at that time. An excellent album that has some of the dark mystic of 1960's proto-prog, but, more advanced and complex.
4 | Deuter | Gammastrahlen-Lamm | D | 1971 | Kuckuck |
Deuter is a one man project. On this album, the music is experimental, psychedelic, ethnic fusion, and progressive kosmische. A very well crafted debut album and widely considered his best. Comparable to Achim Reichel.
5 | Brainstorm | Bosco Biati Weib Alles | Smile a While | 1972 | Musea |
Complex Canterbury-ish progressive. Like early Soft Machine, Supersister, Moving Gelatine Plates with the energy and ferocity of Eiliff's first album. Smokin'. Music is almost entirely instrumental.
