1 | Epidermis | Prime Origin | Genius of the Original Force | 1977 | WMMS | 9 |
Complex progressive that is most often compared to Gentle Giant, and for good reason. The music is full of vocal counterpoint and baroque compositional stylings.
2 | Ivory | At This Very Moment | Sad Cypress | 1979 | Musea | 11 |
Ivory is formed around the composer Ulrich Sommerlate and is son Thomas who introduced him to progressive rock music. Ulrich was a conductor of a symphony orchestra, and became interested in the progressive rock music scene which was mixing classical music ideals with rock music. This album, recorded when Ulrich was 65, proves that you're never too old to ... oh, never mind. The music has strong elements of Genesis and ELP which were probably the main inspirations.
3 | Neuschwanstein | Ice with Dwale | Battlement | 1979 | Musea | 9 |
A strongly Genesis influenced album. The music is elaborate and immaculately performed. Sounds like a pre-cursor to the neo-prog style of Marillion.
4 | Froese, Edgar | Stuntman | Stuntman | 1979 | Caroline | 8 |
Solo electronics from Tangerine Dream synthesists.

5 | Tibet | Eagles | Tibet | 1979 | Musea | 8 |
Progressive with a strong pop-music element. I am reminded mostly of Triumvirat's _A La Carte_ album and a little of _Pompeii_ in some of the poppier moments. There are some nice soundsing instrumental sections that are Eloy-esque, but, not particularly inventive.
6 | Eloy | Mighty Echoes | Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes | 1979 | EMI/Electrola | 11 |
IMO, this is the last of the very good Eloy albums. There is a very obvious Pink Floyd influence, but, it's done so nicely, it's hard not to like it! Eloy Homepage
