1 | Eela Craig | Way Down | One Niter | 1976 | Si-Wan | 11 |
Eela Craig, from Austria, play a classically inspired symphonic with English vocals. This is the band's 2nd album released 5 years after their first. After that early album band re-emerged with a completely different sound with obvious influences from Pink Floyd. There are some obvious imitations of parts of _Wish You Were Here_ here and there. But, other than that, the music is pretty original with a mix of spacey synths, classical motifs and complex rock arrangements.
2 | Ejwuusl Wessahqqan | Hobbl-di-wobbl | Ejwuusl Wessahqqan | 1975 | Penner Records | 9 |
A rare private release with a home-recording sound. The band is an instrumental keyboard/bass/guitar trio. It sounds largely improvisational with hints of Amon Duul II. It has some interesting experimental bits and a nice atmosphere.
3 | Octopus | Kill Your Murderer | Boat of Thoughts | 1976 | LP only | 11 |
Nice lyrical symphonic with hints of Novalis & Hoelderlin. There has not been a legit CD release, but, there is a nice boot CDR version of it going around now. Excellent guitar, bass, drums, and keys play some nice grooves with female vocals. I'm not particularly fond of the nasally female vocals, but, they are not too bad. There are some slight hints of early Camel and Gentle Giant's less complex music.
4 | Toto Blanke | PPG | Electric Circus | 1976 | Bacillus | 11 |
Virtuosic, cutting guitar with excellent electronics. A bit like Heldon's heavier electronic sound, but, with a guitar style closer to John McLaughlin, Eddy Marron, or Frank Zappa. Excellent experimental fusion.
5 | Schicke, Fuhrs & Frohling | Tao | Symphonic Pictures | 1976 | Laser's Edge | 14 |
All 3 albums of SFF plus bonus tracks are available as a 2 CD set on the Laser's Edge label. Symphonic Pictures is the best of the 3. The music is keyboard dominated symphonic with some nice sounding keys/guitar harmonized lines (at least I think it's guitar). Lush keyboard arrangements and loads of mellotron dominate this find album. Parts of the final track 'Pictures' were adopted by Anglagard on their album _Hybris_. SFF grew out of the band Spektakel when all 3 of them quit to start their own project.
