1 | Pell Mell | Toccata | From the New World | 1973 | Germanofon (boot) |
Pell Mell's second album is about equal with their first album, IMO. Violin is much more in the fore than on the previous album. This album is far more classical oriented, almost sounding like a symphony at times. Vocals are in English. Comparable to the first Wallenstein. Long tracks, great keys, violin, & flute. Complex compositions.
2 | Faust | Just a Second (Starts Like That!) | Faust IV | 1973 | Caroline |
The basic song structures sound very much like Kraftwerk or Can. But, Faust would never leave things alone at that. On top of all of the music is a continuous elaboration of electronic experimentation overdubs. Faust is perhaps the epitomy of the Krautrock aesthetic.
3 | Wallenstein | Song of Wire | Cosmic Century | 1973 | Schallplatten Vertriebs (?) |
After their great first album _Blitzkrieg_, Wallenstein released a somewhat dissappointing album _Mother Universe_. This, their third album is probably their next strongest album. Purportedly, after this album it's all downhill. At this point in time Pell Mell and Wallenstein are almost indistinguishable. Violin is prevalent, but, guitar and keys are still the main instruments. The music sometimes lapses into less progressive hard rock forms. A decent album.
4 | Agitation Free | In the Silence of the Morning Sunrise | Second | 1973 | Spalax |
When the bands leans back into their flowing guitar improvisations, it
takes on an a meditative quality not unlike Popol Vuh. This is the 2nd
of only 2 albums that the band released while they were together in the
70's. Several post-humous releases have come out since. Excellent stuff.

5 | Passport | Puzzle | Hand Made | 1973 | Atlantic |
Passport's third album. Although in later years, the band was more of a typical adult-oriented fuzak, in the early years, the music is not far afield from some of the better fusion-prog bands of early 70's Germany. A possible comparison would be Release Music Orchestra. Even at this time, though, the band had a strong American funk/soul influence which can sound a bit dated.
6 | Cornucopia | Day of a Daydreambeliever (excerpt) | Full Horn | 1973 | Repertoire/Brain |
A great album that is pretty difficult to categorize because of the great shifts that take place. The music is complex with an upbeat funky English style. A little East of Eden, Raw Material, Arthur Brown, and Eiliff come to mind. Some of this excerpt remind me of Amon Duul II, but not much else on this album does. This is pretty much how the whole album pans out. There are bits that sound like one thing or the other, but, it does not last for long, as this album is a truly original mix of unexpected musical turns.
