1 | Storm at Sunrise | Moonrock | Garden of Forgotten Ideals | 2000 | Gray Sky Records | 11 (Alan's) |
"Storm At Sunrise is a new project lead by Dave
Gryder, who some of you may remember as the mastermind
behind the album Covenant - Nature's Divine
Reflection. Here he still plays drums & keyboards,
and also sings. However, this is an album of
progressive hard rock circa Deep Purple - Machine
Head. Ernie Myers of the group Hands plays guitar. A
fun trip in the wayback machine, get ready to ROCK!

2 | Shawn Persinger | Hideous Kinky - Life in a Box | Reasonable Horse | 2000 | E.H.P. Productions | 10 (Alan's) |
"Many of you know Shawn Persinger as guitarist for the
band Boud Deun. Since then he has done quite a bit of
travelling and performing as a solo artist. This
album is quite different from Boud Deun, as it
features him on acoustic guitar. Most of the tracks
are instrumental, but a few have vocals. The lyrics
he writes are quite interesting, imo. He seems to be
influenced quite a bit by Leo Kottke. I saw him play
most of the album this past spring in a restaurant
here in town. See him if you can. Since most of the
tracks are short, I've presented two tracks here, one
instrumental and one with vocals." - Alan Mallery

3 | Ne Zhdali | Bossa 2000 Turbo | Tokyo Nov. 25, 1998 | 1999 | Prospect Mira | 9 |
Ne Zhdali, from Estonia & Russia, play an unusual avant progressive with
horns & guitars as the prime melodic instruments. The music has the raw-
edged quirkiness of Captain Beefheart mixed with a sound that is like an
electrified oompah-band. "Weird, wild, schtuff".

4 | AG Flek | Rehradice - moravska lidova | Tramtarie | 1991 | FT Records | 7 |
I'm not sure why I thought this was from 1999 originally, but, I only just discovered it's from 1991. Oh well, too late, so here it is anyway. AG Flek, from the Czech Republic play a pleasant folk-rock with slight elements of progressivity. This song sample is an excellent cut above most of the rest of the album, though, with it's anthemic melody.
5 | Stefan Dill Trio | Path | Stefan Dill Trio | 2000 | unreleased
Stefan is a versatile guitarist crossing many boundaries of music
including electric improvised free-jazz/rock as well as introspective
acoustic guitar pieces with a flamenco flair. On this current recording
Stefan is joined by DAve Nielsen on bass and Dave Wayne on drums for
some hard-edged fusion that brings to mind Sonny Sharrock among other
explorative fusion guitarist. Stefan is looking for a record company,
so if you know of any independent labels that release similar material,
email him your suggestions.

6 | Dreams of Sanity | Masquerade - Interlude | Masquerade | 1999 | Hall of Sermon | 11 (Alan's) |
"Dreams of Sanity is an Austrian band who present a very dramatic and orchestrated progmetal sound. This is their second album, and I believe is a concept album based on the "Phantom of the Opera". While their first album featured two vocalists, now they only have one, but she has an excellent voice. This album features strong production, with songs shifting between power and beauty. 7 | Ruja | Oled Sa Jarv | Need ei vaata tagasi... | 1999 | HyperElwood | 12 |
Ruja is like the mother of all Estonian rock music. The band dates back to the
early 1970's and has had dozens of musicians pass through that have gone
on to start other progressive music bands in Estonia, such as In Spe. Over
such a long history with different musicians, you can imagine how much the
music has changed over the years, ranging from rockabilly inflected rock music
to complex progressive rock of the highest order. Just last year, this 5 CD
box-set was released which compiles material over their entire history, most
of which is previously un-released in any format. The 5 CD's of the box set
are now also available in 2 separate sets of 2 & 3 CD's each. Even if a lot
of the material is not overtly progressive, it is all largely enjoyable.
