# | Artist | Song (click to play) | Album | Year | CD label | My Gnosis Rating |
1 | Tony Levin | Gecko Walk | Waters of Eden | 2000 | Narada | 10 |
Tony Levin's 2nd solo release, this time with several other alums of
Peter Gabriel's recording and touring band including Larry "Synergy"
Fast and Jerry Marotta. This is an all instrumental upbeat fusiony
progressive that at times reminds me of Pekka Pohjola's solo work.

2 | Joshua Bell & Edgar Meyer w/ Sam Bush & Mike Marshall | Hang Hang | Short Trip Home | 1999 | Sony | 10 (Alan's) |
"Here's an interesting item that I found out about from seeing on PBS. The lineup is string bass, violin, mandolin, and acoustic guitar. The music is a unique combination of classical and bluegrass. Check this out if you'd like some good musicianship in an acoustic setting." - Alan Mallery | ||||||
3 | Bruford Levin Upper Extremities | Cobalt Canyons | BLUE Nights | 2000 | Papa Bear Records | 10 (Alan's) |
"This is a double-cd taken from live shows supporting
the BLUE album. For those who don't know, it's Bill
Bruford - Drums, Tony Levin - Bass & Stick, David Torn
- Guitars & Loops, Chris Botti - Trumpet. Generally,
they play songs from the album, but stretch them out
more and add improvisations." - Alan Mallery

4 | Motor Humming | Cyborg Fish | Musical Aluminum | 1999 | Tzadik | 9 |
A new instrumental guitar/bass/drums band from Japan. Their style mixes
progressive, punk, metal & psychedelia much like some other new Japanese
progressive bands - Korekyojin, for example.

5 | Tempus Fugit | The Sight | Dawn After the Storm | 1999 | Rock Symphony | 8 |
Pleasant but somewhat predictable and unadventurous symphonic. The album is
mostly instrumental with modern formulaic guitar. This may appeal to fans
of late 70's Genesis.

6 | Fates Warning | So | Disconnected | 2000 | Metal Blade | 13 (Alan's) |
"After their brilliant concept album "A Pleasant Shade
of Grey", I thought any follow up would probably be
pretty mediocre. How wrong I was! Fates Warning's
new album is another tour de force concept album, with
excellent songwriting and emotional singing and
playing. Ex-Dream Theater keyboardist Kevin Moore
contributes some nice keyboards, and some parts sound
very symphonic. Compared to other prog-metal bands,
Fates Warning skips the pyrotechnics and delivers a
very thoughtful and mature music." - Alan Mallery
