1 | Mastermind | The Queen of Sheba | Angels of the Apocalypse | 2000 | Inside Out | 10 |
Mastermind takes a new direction with an updated prog/metal sound and a new female vocalist. Keyboardist Jens Johansson, who played on the last album Excelsior, returns on this new album. Incredible guitar and keyboard intensity and interplay with dramatic vocals. Mastermind Official Homepage
2 | Teknicolor | Lullaby / Legend | LNA's Dream | 1999 | Musea | 9 |
A difficult album to classify. Much of it is atmospheric electronics, with some occassional world music elements. But, there is primarily a Romantic-era classical feel to the compositions with piano, classical orchestrations, and choir vocals. At other times the music takes on more of an American classical/jazz feel ala George Gershwin.
3 | Niacin | Stompin' Ground | Deep | 2000 | Magna Carta | 11 |
Instrumental prog/fusion of keyboards (John Novello), bass (Billy Sheehan),
and drums (Dennis Chambers). As the name suggests, Niacin features a
heavy dose of B3. If you like the sound of the Hammond organ, you will
love this. Sheehan, of Mr Big, and Dennis Chambers, who is one of the
greatest drummers ever, help to propel this hard-driving fusion.

4 | Bendian's Interzone, Gregg | Drive | Myriad | 1999 | Atavistic | 12 |
A unique and incredible spacy jazz fusion/prog. Gregg Bendian is an incredibly
talented percusionist as well as vibraphonist. The music has a feel of
electric Miles at times, Sun Ra, and at it's most intense like the best
Mahavishnu. In fact they play a Mahavishnu song "Sanctuary" on this album.
The key role of vibraphone adds an interesting new twist, almost like
the Modern Jazz Quartet "on acid" ;-)

5 | One Shot | M.D.M. | One Shot | 2000 | ? private release ? | 12 |
Heavy prog/fusion like Mahavishnu, Magma, 1970's Miles, John Abercrombie. The bassist and keyboardist are in the current line-up of Magma, which explains the Zeuhlish rhythms and progressions. An essential modern fusion. Only 500 copies were printed !
