1 NeBeLNeST solilock NeBeLNeST 1999 Laser's Edge
A new French band that seems to have an equal pedigree of hard-core grunge and progressive music. The music is mostly improvisational with mellotron (or mellotron-like sounds) and heavily distorted and sustained guitar notes. I think it is pretty decent, but, not the classic that most other people seem to make it out to be. The compositions are too simplistic to raise it up to more than a decent album, in my estimation. It is a nice brooding atmosphere that I like, though. It may grow on me, yet.

2 Kenso Kohan Nite/Zaiya Kara No Kikan Esoptron 1999 Musea
"Kenso is a long-running instrumental band from Japan combining elements of symphonic prog, fusion, and traditional Japanese themes. This is their newest studio recording, 8 years since the previous "Yume no Oka". While the lineup is the same, instead of repeating the past they have cranked up their amps and added a more aggresive rock sound to the mix. Here is a short acoustic tune the segueways in to a longer piece. They are scheduled to appear at Progfest 2000." - Alan Mallery

3 Teru's Symphonia Wish The Gate 1999 Musea
"Teru's Symphonia is one of the longest-running Japanese symphonic groups, their output going back to the mid 1980s I believe. Here is a track from their newest release. In the neighborhood of groups like Providence, Pageant, Ie Rae Shan, etc." - Alan Mallery

4 Shawn Lane Peace in Mississippi The Tritone Fascination 1999 Eye Reckon
This is a guitar-virtuoso album. So, if you like music where the focus is incredible guitar playing - this album is essential. The music is upbeat and fun, like Gary Hoey or Mike Keneally. This is Shawn's 2nd solo album, the first being "Power of Ten" which is way OOP and hard to find. The song on today's show from the album is a Hendrix tune and really knocks you out the way Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughn does. Shawn also recorded several stellar fusion albums with ex-Mahavishnu bassist Jonas Hellborg, including _Temporal Analogues of Paradise_, _Time is the Enemy_, and _Abstract Logic_.

5 Hedningarna Ukkonen Karelia Visa 1999 Silence Records / Northside
Completely acoustic folk-progressive from Finland. Breathtakingly beautiful vocals and captivating music. One of my new favorite albums of 1999. Instrumentation includes violin, flute, Swedish bagpipes, lute, hurdy gurdy, accordion, and assorted persussion.

6 Runaway Totem Andros Medomai Andromeda 1999 Musea
A new Italian take on the Zeuhl sound. The music is heavy and brooding like Magma or Devil Doll. The vocals remind me of the attempted deep vocals in the Japanese group Outer Limits. The music also has elements of space-rock ala Hawkwind. Perhaps comparable to the French band Xaal.
